A distinctive feature of ‘The Rings of Saturn’ by WG Sebald (indeed all his main prose books) is the use of photographs throughout, either to illustrate a passage or to augment the narrative in some way (see ‘Shadows of Reality’ by Boilerhouse Press about his photos, which I recently purchased).
Thanks Bella - I was astounded by the extent of the shoe trade, second to Norhampton I believe, employing about 1/10th of the population. But then cities like Norwich had a lot of industry in and around, that has largely closed now, with most manufacturing moving to Asia.
